Ingredients:
For the meatballs:
- 1 lb ground beef or turkey (or a combination)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version)
- 1/4 cup milk (or dairy-free alternative)
- 1/4 cup chopped onions
- 1/4 cup chopped celery
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional)
For the gravy:
- 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
- 2 tablespoons flour (use a gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free version)
- 2 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth for a lighter version)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Make the meatballs:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, milk, onions, celery, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Form the mixture into meatballs (about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter) and place them on a plate or baking sheet.
- Cook the meatballs:
- Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add a small amount of oil.
- Add the meatballs in batches, cooking them for about 6-8 minutes per side, until they are browned and cooked through.
- Once cooked, remove the meatballs from the pan and set them aside.
- Make the gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter or heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
- Gradually add the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce (optional) and season with salt and pepper.
- Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
- Combine and serve:
- Return the cooked meatballs to the pan with the gravy and let them simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes so the flavors can meld together.
- Serve the meatballs with the gravy poured over the top. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley.
Enjoy these meatballs with gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or alongside steamed vegetables for a satisfying meal!
