Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey (or a combination)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version)
  • 1/4 cup milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 1/4 cup chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup chopped celery
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional)

For the gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons flour (use a gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free version)
  • 2 cups beef broth (or vegetable broth for a lighter version)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Make the meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, milk, onions, celery, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
    • Form the mixture into meatballs (about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter) and place them on a plate or baking sheet.
  2. Cook the meatballs:
    • Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat and add a small amount of oil.
    • Add the meatballs in batches, cooking them for about 6-8 minutes per side, until they are browned and cooked through.
    • Once cooked, remove the meatballs from the pan and set them aside.
  3. Make the gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter or heat olive oil over medium heat.
    • Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Gradually add the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce (optional) and season with salt and pepper.
    • Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
  4. Combine and serve:
    • Return the cooked meatballs to the pan with the gravy and let them simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes so the flavors can meld together.
    • Serve the meatballs with the gravy poured over the top. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley.
