Flaky Puff Pastry Snacks with Sausage and Cheese

  1. 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  2. 300 g (about 10 oz) ground sausage or minced meat
  3. 100 g (1 cup) shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  4. 2 tbsp tomato or pizza sauce (optional)
  5. 1 egg (for egg wash)
  6. 1 tbsp milk (to mix with the egg)
  7. Salt and pepper to taste
  8. Optional: dried herbs (oregano, thyme, or paprika)
  9. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  10. Prepare the puff pastry:
    • Unroll the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface.
    • Spread a thin layer of tomato or pizza sauce over the pastry (optional).
  11. Add the filling:
    • Evenly sprinkle the raw ground sausage (or minced meat) over the pastry.
    • Add shredded cheese on top.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and herbs to taste.
  12. Roll it up:
    • Carefully roll the pastry from one edge to the other, forming a tight log.
    • Seal the edge by pressing gently.
  13. Cut and prepare for baking:
    • Slice the roll into even pieces (about 3–4 cm thick).
    • Place them cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet.
  14. Brush with egg wash:
    • Beat the egg with milk and brush the tops for a shiny golden finish.
    • Sprinkle a little extra cheese on top if desired.
  15. Bake:
    • Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
  16. Serve warm:
    • Enjoy them hot and flaky — perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a snack!
