Recipe: Custard Cake

Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- Make the cake batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
- Prepare the custard filling: In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and sugar over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and cornstarch until smooth. Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook, whisking constantly, until it thickens to a custard-like consistency. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Assemble the cake: Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking dish. Gently pour the custard filling over the cake batter (it will sink to the bottom).
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The custard filling will bubble up around the edges.
- Cool the cake in the baking dish for about 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
